Beaudesert Hospital recently hosted a unique perioperative training program designed to boost skills and knowledge for rural healthcare professionals.

The Statewide Anaesthesia and Perioperative Care Clinical Network (SWAPNet) Rural Perioperative Team Training Program was well attended with 19 medical, nursing and theatre support staff from across the region participating.

NUM Perioperative Services Jason Roberts said the intensive training program played a vital role in equipping healthcare professionals with advanced expertise and provided expert training and upskilling opportunities for rural healthcare staff.

He said participants engaged in a range of activities designed to sharpen their skills including advanced life support training, front-of-neck access techniques and immersive crisis management scenarios based on real-life events.

“The exercises performed during the simulation aim to equip trainees with the knowledge and confidence necessary to effectively handle emergencies in perioperative settings,” he said.

“For me, and I believe the perioperative teams, these sims represent not only an amazing opportunity to think about and perform in complex clinical situations with life-like processes, but provide an opportunity for discussion, debriefing and feedback from suitable sources.

“It’s quite rare to have such a rich, facilitated discussion with multiple teams in the perioperative space. In my opinion, this will prepare all teams to perform more effectively in the next complex clinical event.”

The session marked the 34th delivery of the program which has had a widespread impact across Queensland since its launch in 2019.

Jason said the training facilitator commended the engagement and enthusiasm of the attendees over the two-day program.

“The success of the program at Beaudesert Hospital reflects the ongoing dedication of healthcare professionals to continuous learning and enhancement of patient care in rural communities,” he said
